23 New Monroe Reflex® Units to be Offered for Popular Domestic Applications Originally Equipped with Monotube Technology
Monroe, MI - A new offering of Monroe Reflex® monotube-style shock absorbers will be available in July for popular domestic light trucks and sport-utility vehicles that were originally equipped with monotube units. Monroe® ride control products are manufactured and marketed by Tenneco Automotive (NYSE: TEN), one of the world’s largest suppliers of tri-, twin- and monotube shocks and struts for original equipment and replacement applications.
The new Monroe Reflex® monotube product offering – initially comprising 23 part numbers – will cover popular Chevrolet, Ford, Hummer and Jeep applications that were factory-equipped with monotube technology. The balance of the Monroe Reflex® product line features advanced twin-tube light truck, van and SUV shocks and struts precision tuned to the customer’s desired ride characteristics.
Among the leading monotube-equipped applications to be covered by the expanded Monroe Reflex® line of shocks are Chevrolet 1500 Silverado 4WD (1999-04), K1500/C1550 4WD (1987-00), and S-10 4WD (1994-03) models; Hummer H2 (2003-04); Ford Ranger FX4 4WD (2002-04) and F-150 4WD (1997-03); and Jeep Grand Cherokee (1993-04) with Up Country Suspension.
Monroe Reflex® monotube shocks feature a high-pressure gas charge that is separated from the units’ internal oil to provide additional spring rate and help maximize damping efficiency and control. The Monroe Reflex® design also provides an up to 50-percent larger internal working area than some standard OE and competition units, thereby delivering additional strength. To further enhance ride control characteristics, Monroe Reflex® monotube shocks include a hydraulic lockout to cushion the impact as the vehicle suspension is fully extended.
"Monotube shocks are an excellent choice for vehicles engineered to use this technology, but they’re not the right choice for all models," said Mark Christiaanse, director of product management for the Monroe® product line. "Our OE-inspired approach to product design helps ensure that Monroe® dealers won’t have to face unhappy customers who are surprised by the harsher ride that often results from the use of monotube technology on applications that are not designed for the additional spring rate."
This approach differs from the strategies of some competing shock and strut manufacturers, who encourage service dealers to choose monotube designs for virtually all replacement applications, according to Christiaanse. "That 'one-style-fits-all' philosophy isn’t in the best interest of the consumer or service dealer," he said. "Vehicle manufacturers identify the ideal ride control technology for each model; using a non-OE design can change spring rates and lead to degraded comfort and control. The result could be a costly service comeback."
